This is the plan for “COM-RIDGE (Exchange Building),” an open and flexible social space located at the center of a campus lined with diverse buildings, and “L-BASE (Building No. 200),” which houses lecture rooms and research facilities. By connecting Building No. 200 and the surrounding structures via second-floor elevated walkways, the Exchange Building was designed to serve as a “junction” where flows of people converge.

Inside the Exchange Building, two spiral “paths” — one inner, one outer — descend gradually from the second-floor walkways down to ground level. The narrow sloped passage running along the outside and the wider stepped space winding along the inside overlap at points, creating a variety of places for students to inhabit. From small niches to expansive collaborative spaces with sweeping views, the diverse spatial sequence was planned to encourage students’ free activity and interaction. Structural and mechanical systems are concentrated between the two paths, accommodating a void with a toplight, staircases, and utility spaces. The structural system — composed of two columns and cantilevered beams — maintains its balance through the restraining effect of the circular plan, lending the entire building a sense of weightlessness.

Building No. 200, by contrast, follows a rational and rigorous layout in pursuit of constructional efficiency. Deep-plan spaces such as lecture rooms, drafting studios, and research laboratories are arranged along the west side, while utilities and circulation are placed to the east. Column spacing in the beam direction was determined to match standard deck slab dimensions, eliminating secondary beams and establishing a regular structural and mechanical grid. The sawtooth façade on the west acts as a series of large vertical louvers, blocking low western sun while admitting light from the south, and simultaneously functions as structural bracing. On the exterior, this sculptural form defines the building’s character; inside, the undulating light it casts gives the space a rhythmic quality.
